The Benefits of Conducting an Organizational Assessment

I think most business owners would agree that people are your strongest asset. Yes, product line is important and customers should also be your focus, but good employees are truly the key to any company's success.

Richard Branson has famously been quoted as saying, "There's no magic formula for great company culture. The key is just to treat your staff how you would like to be treated."

He's a smart man. We could learn from him.

But how do you know you're taking care of your people. The easy answer is your employees aren't leaving, but it's more than that. It's looking at the processes and methods you have in place that affect your employees.

For example, when was the last time you looked closely at your leadership/management team?

  • Do they have a clear understanding of your mission and values? Are they good representatives of your values? Are they building and motivating a team around the organization's mission and values?

  • Do you have a cohesive leadership team at all levels? Do your senior managers understand your middle and line managers and vice versa?

  • Does your leadership team have a capacity to change and innovate? Sometimes creating healthy discomfort leads to much needed progress.

  • Are your managers identifying and recruiting talent? Attracting good, talented people is not the sole responsibility of HR.

  • Are your managers communicating with employees in a way that is regarded as transparent, honest, authentic and ongoing? If not, why not?

Analyzing the role of the leadership team is just one of five key components to conducting an organizational assessment. The five focus areas in an Organizational Assessment include:
