Recruiting Candidates Using Social Media
When was the last time you checked your company's reviews on Glassdoor, Indeed or Comparably? Were the reviews favorable or were the comments posted by disgruntled employees who recently separated (and not on good terms)?
50% of candidates say they wouldn't work for a company with a bad reputation. HALF. Potentially, employers could lose half of their candidate pool simply by not paying attention to negative comments or reviews on their social media accounts and/or employee review sites.
So why is it important what employees are saying online? Because in the recruiting space, information for today's candidates is received through your website, social media accounts and online review sites. When the research provides that 70% of candidates trust what employees say about a company over brand ads, you better pay attention to your online presence.
What exactly are candidates looking for online and what can you do to improve your presence? Do two things: 1) be the author of your company's story; and 2) be engaging, when possible, on review sites.
Let's talk about the first component - being the author of your company's story. Candidates are looking for 5 key pieces of information on jobs: compensation package details; benefits package details; basic company information; what makes the company an attractive place to work; and the company's mission, vision and values. As you're in full recruitment mode are candidates able to find this information on your website, social media accounts or employee review sites? If not, you're not actively telling your company's story!
Second, be engaging, when possible, on review sites. We know candidates seek out this information. Is information being shared in a positive manner or a negative light. If negative, respond with a simple statement, such as: "We're sorry this was your experience. We'd love to hear from you directly so that we can continue making [xyz company] an outstanding place to work."
Online reviews are not just for separated employees. Encourage your current employees to share what they enjoy about working for your company. What is the work environment like? Is the leadership accessible and present? Is communication ongoing and transparent? Is the pay competitive and fair? Are there
opportunities for learning and growth? These questions (and their answers!) will provide you with a solid start of communicating the right information.
