My three takeaways from this book:
A gift is a symbol of the relationship. And so begins John's first chapter. He shares the mistake many make by giving a gift that has your brand on it, which is often meaningless to the recipient. Get to know the person. Give something meaningful. Be remembered.
Assistants can be amazing advocates and ambassadors. Ruhlin reminds us that the CEO, while important, shouldn't be our sole focus for a relationship with a company.
The hard question: are you giving a promotion or a gift? If your gift is to be truly memorable, it needs to be without an expectation of business in return - it's more about building the relationship.
